Short-finned pilot whales along the Cape Hatteras, NC shelf break engage in extensive benthic foraging when the seafloor is available to these deep divers. Researchers eavesdropped on their echolocation clicks, recorded on DTAGs, to detect seafloor echoes. Some whales foraged both benthically and pelagically, revealing the plasticity of these predators.
