A team of researchers and Navy staff recently completed the first controlled exposure experiment of the 2021 field season for the Atlantic Behavioral Response Study. This project has been underway since 2017 with the primary objective of assessing the behavioral response of beaked whales and pilot whales to mid-frequency active sonar. The tram had previously deployed 13 satellite telemetry tags on Cuvier's beaked whales. These tags track animal movements as well as diving behavior and pass that data back via satellites to be analyzed. Check out more details of this event on the project blog.
The Arleigh Burke-class guided-missile destroyer USS Farragut (DDG 99) participated in this most recent CEE. Read more about the Farragut's support and the project in this recent press release by U.S. Fleet Forces Command who funds the Atlantic BRS as part of the Navy's Marine Species Monitoring Program.
